Distinguished biblical scholar and teacher, ecumenical statesman and man of letters, he has played a unique role in the religious and cultural life of Mexico and as an interpreter of Latin America to the world. His writings have long established his scholarly eminence, and many have appeared in other languages. He has been a leading collaborator in the translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek texts into Spanish. Founding editor of the Mexican literary quarterly, Luminar, he also, under the pseudonym of Pedro Gringoire, has had a long influential career as a columnist in Excelsior, Mexico's outstanding national publication. For the surpassing quality of his contribution to the life of his country, for his willingness to assume risks in a lonely struggle for ecumenical accomplishment in a different situation, and for the transcending courage and vision given to younger compatriots for enabling roles in the new ecumenical scene in Mexico and beyond, Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
